Life as a Visual Artist working with Sea Glass in Nova Scotia

Hey friends, my name is Farrah! I create and design Sea Glass Art in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. I'd love to share a glimpse of what my day to day looks like as a small business owner.

A bit about my story as a Sea Glass Artist, I have been working with Sea Glass as a visual artist since 2014. Although you won't find my art on Etsy, you can find all of my new and past are here on my Havenside Designs website.

I'm inspired by the beach coastlines here on Cape Breton Island. The sweet little Sand Pipers who wade on the shores or the tiny birds who sit up on the power lines. The scenery here is very colorful, things are full of life and there is a real sense of joy in the air.

Thanks for joining me as I walk through an average Sunday as a Seaglass artist here in beautiful Nova Scotia. I love that you have stopped by to learn more about Sea Glass and what my life is like as a small business owner in Nova Scotia.

Lets dive in!

Before I start my day as a small business owner, coffee is a priority! Lets have a cup shall we?

I like to make my coffee in my Chemex, I have been enjoying an Italian roast blend recently. Generally I will wake up, brew some coffee and do some light stretching or a quick workout to kick start my day. This morning I also made some breakfast tortilla wraps, oh my gosh so tasty!

This morning I also whipped up some yummy breakfast tortilla wraps. Oh my gosh they were so good!!

After having my coffee and breakfast I was ready to start the day. On todays agenda, a morning hike with my husband. Then drilling holes into some wood dics, which will be used for Seaglass Christmas Ornaments. Finally working on organizing my workspace and sending out this blog post. Wow, yeah this is a busy Sunday but it left me feeling so productive.

Once I finished up with breakfast, Nick, myself and our little dog went out on a hike and WOW was it ever beautiful out. The coastline was bursting with color, even in this cooler autumn weather. We even seen a big ship out in the distance!

It was such a perfect day that I wish I could have gone out beach combing as well. There are so many amazing places to beach comb and find Sea Glass in Cape Breton. In fact, if you are curious about where to find Sea Glass in Nova Scotia check out another one of my blog posts on that topic, here!

Although the sun was shining, I ddi have a lot of things to scratch off my checklist today so I headed over to my parents workshop ( Thanks Mom & Dad!) to start on my Sea Glass Christmas Ornaments.

Yes, I am back with them again for the third year and I'm so excited! This year I have gone ahead with natural Birch wood, the wood discs were made in beautiful Newfoundland. I had to drill holes through 140, the holes allow me to run the twine through. If any of you are interested in a blog post showing how to do a project like this, let me know in the comments below, I'd be happy to share.

Once I had finished drilling through all those ornaments I felt like I needed a bit of a break. Coffee time! We packed up and went home where I made, yet again more coffee! I can't be the only one who fuels my day with coffee right?! Haha.

From here I had to finish up organizing my workspace, which is in our spare room. I got the majority of it done but still another afternoon is needed to have everything neat and tidy. I am on the hunt for some decor items to make the space more cheery. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to comment below :)

In between I enjoyed some dinner and started checking messages on my social accounts.  I made some posts and got caught up and then a friend popped by and gifted me with some lovely new plants. They are in propagation phase and I absolutely adore them!!  If you are a plant lover like me, I'd love to know what you have or hope to have soon. Propagating plants has become such an addiction!

Once I finished up with my social media reviews and said goodbye to my friend who dropped off these lovely plants I got into my most comfortable pair of jogging pants and completed this blog post!

I'm really looking forward to the holiday season, how are we in November already? In addition to my Seaglass Christmas Ornaments I am also about to do a new batch of hand poured Soy Wax 'Seaglass Mermaid Candles'. These candles are absolutely stunning and if you'd like to preorder them before I do my next batch feel free to click here.

I hope you enjoyed reading this, I find that a typical day as a small business owner is pretty much all over the place. That is just the way I like it!

Cheers,
Farrah
