There’s something about living in a small coastal community that makes you notice the little things. Lately, for me, it’s been backyard chickens.
If you look closely, you'll see them everywhere here in Louisbourg, wandering through yards, peeking through fences, following closely behind their people. Once these sweet chickens catch your attention you realize they all have their own little personalities. Some are curious, some are shy, and some are clearly in charge.
That’s where this collection started, right here in foggy Louisbourg.
If you are new to our page, a bit of insight into seaglass or "mermaid tears". Each art piece I design begins with a dreamy aspect of our coastal communities here on Cape Breton Island, mostly in Louisbourg. I then select seaglass that has been shaped over time by the Atlantic ocean and completely one of a kind.
I don’t go into these with a strict plan. I lay out different pieces and see what feels right. This is a passion of mine and something I find relaxing and joyful. It is never rushed or made to be a certain way. I just go with the flow :) A shape will start to look like a body, a smaller piece becomes a chick, and slowly they turn into little chickens, just like the ones you'll find along the coastlines in Nova Scotia.
What I love most is how each one ends up feeling different. Just like those sweet little chicken personalities. This collection is really just a reflection of the everyday things that make life here feel special living by the ocean.
Restful moments, simple scenes, and a bit of magic you don’t always notice until you slow down. Each piece is handmade in my home on Havenside, and no two are ever the same. I had so much fun making this backyard chicken collection and I hope you love it as much as I do!
